Great success of the Mabhuti Internet Project

Report of the Voices of Youths program in partnership with Beneto&Beneto

This week, UNIPEF and the Beneto&Beneto explored an empowering  project in that both teaches youth participants important communication skills and uses the Internet medium to educate its youth audience on pertinent life issues.

In Mabhuti, almost 55% of the population is under 25 but few are able to access quality information on issues affecting their lives. As a result, youth are not acquiring the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to deal effectively with common life events.  With the donation from our partner Beneto&Beneto, we managed to install 20 mobile stations for this young population to help them surf online and feel free to express themselves.

The Mabhuti Internet project was initiated early in the year of 2010, by Beneto&Beneto, a world-famous consulting firm which is also passional in creating positive social change through media and internet engagement. Beneto&Beneto has always been a privileged partner of most NGOs, especially those dedicated to the respect of children rights such as UNIPEF. Beneto&Beneto and us have been working together for a long time now and together have reached out millions of children and young people around the world, empowering them in issues related to youth participation, self-development, education, children and youth in difficult circumstances, and promoting life skill based education.

After getting initial funding and government approval for the project,  UNIPEF and Beneto&Beneto had set up a series of trainings in three secondary schools in Uakse, Sarafane and Xeinuang (3 of the most biggest secondary schools in Mabhuti).  Teachers introduced the project at an open meeting and interested youth were invited to apply.   The trainings were set up as workshops conducted by experienced youth trainers and local experts from Beneto&Beneto. The workshops combined Internet communication skills and theory with hands-on practice.  School coordinators and teachers also attended the trainings in order to provide on-going, local support for the project.

In addition to the technique trainings, the program was also consisted of encouraging the young generation in Mabhuti to express themselves, such as self-awareness, self-esteem, creative thinking, interpersonal communications skills and how to say out their disagreements through the canal of Internet.  “This essential combination of the technical knowledge and the method to express provide youth with a strong foundation of confidence to address the challenges they face as young people growing up in Laos and in the overall global context,” says Carlo Jitobuit, Founder and CEO of the NGO Children of Mabhuti.

Xeinuang,

Following up on the success of this Mabhuti Internet project in Uakse, Sarafane and  Xeinuang,  UNIPEF and the Beneto&Beneto replicated a similar program all over the country of Mabhuti.  The result of a survey after this activity showed great success and wide welcome of Mabhuti Internet project among the youths in this country (see the figure above). Almost 95% of the paticipates said they were satisfied of the kind of activities and expected to attend once more.  The project also provides a creative outlet to rural youth who have few such opportunities during or after school.
